Hermit Crab

Slip inside, hermit crab

Avoid the great stampede

Danger lurks on the edge

Beyond the deep seaweed

Here inside, snug domain

Echoes haunt the shell

Coiled up tight, you’re unseen

Sure that all is well

Dive for food, brief exposed

Flick back in and rest

Stealthily creep and move

Attract no interest

Shadows pass, light and dark

Visions on your dome

Waves may lap, stir and nudge

Threatening your home

All secure for a time

Until growth compels

Suffocating, space is tight

Search for larger shells

Once exposed, fear descends

Cold on naked skin

Run and dive, hermit crab

Time to re-begin
