Impending Spring

Wings over wintery Warsash
Wings over wintery Warsash

Though days are bleak, yet glistening roads

Can lift the heart from heavy loads

To glance at fields bright flecked with ice

Inspiring hope and wonder

The chill wind whistles, seems to bite

Requiring scarves and coats drawn tight

And head down low the passers-by

Seem deep in thought to ponder

They often miss the pushing bud

That’s breaking through the icy mud

A sign that winter’s ice-filled rage

Has short time left to plunder

The watery sun whose sterile gaze

Belies its strength on brighter days

It lights, but fails to warm the land

Its shafts through trees meander

A trickling river helps us trust

That new life through the earth will thrust

Un-tensing and unclothing us

To greet the spring’s new wonder
