Common Clay

Common clay
Some of us are common clay
Unremarked and unobserved
Blending in on bus or train
Straight and plain, not lush and curved
Some of us don’t draw the eye,
Featureless or grey and bland
Put together carelessly
Drab in ways few understand
How we’d love to draw a glance
Warm a smile
Make others dance
How we’d love to shorten breath
Fill a heart
Postpone a death
Yet, though life as common clay
On the surface may be dull
Still we hide a secret soul
Spirit-rich beneath the hull
